If it were up to him, he would have left Washington a long time ago. If it were up to him, he would have probably done whatever he needed to do to destroy himself. But if there was one person in the world that he could absolutely not refuse, it was Alice Cullen. And Alice had begged and pleaded for him to stay; to perhaps move from the outside garden to…somewhere closer to the house. After all, he had been out there all week. It was time for him to move around a bit. Jasper hadn’t wanted to; in fact, all he wanted to do was curl up into a little ball and perhaps become part of the earth. But of course, his Alice wouldn’t allow that.
Jasper sighed again, hunched over with his hands cradling his face and his fingertips basically clawing into his skin. He had never loathed himself more than he did now. How could he let this happen? To poor Isabella Swan, no less. Why was he so weak? He never realized how different he was from his family until just then. If he was like Emmett, his strength would have stopped him from biting Isabella. If he was like Edward, his love would have beaten his thirst. If he was like Carlisle, his patience and immunity to human blood would have helped him so immensely. But who was he? Jasper Hale. The newest member of the Cullen family; the most wild…the most out of control.
He gritted his teeth together and forming fists, he punched downward toward the wooden porch steps. BAM. Both of his hands easily broke through the wood, splinters forming everywhere. Jasper stood up, and began to pace around in the front lawn, trying to calm himself down. How ironic. He had the ability to calm everyone else down; why couldn’t he do so himself? But this was how Jasper was: he always kept thinking of the damage he caused, and he just couldn’t bring himself to stop. It was torturing him; gnawing him to pieces and pulling him apart. He wanted nothing more than to just…leave. To never see any of his family again; he couldn’t bear to see them again. Not as the monster he was. But…Alice. Could he really exist without Alice?
He knew, from inside the house, his family was watching him. They wanted to make sure he was safe; they wanted to make sure he was all right. Would he ever be again? What he did…it was unfathomable. It was unacceptable. It was the greatest sin anyone could have ever committed. He bit Isabella; he changed her. He took away her humanity; he took away her life. All because he lost control. All because he was weak. If Jasper could break down and cry, he would have.
Rosalie tried to make it better. “Jasper, stop moping already. Bella wanted this.” Jasper ignored her. That wasn’t the point! This wasn’t supposed to happen. He couldn’t even bring himself to look at Edward. Who hated Jasper more? Edward or…himself? He took deeper breaths, trying to calm down. He felt so bad. Jasper’s head snapped up, after staring at the grass for so long. He stared ahead of him, his black eyes focusing on the forest surrounding him. He could run. He could run and hide and never return. He could use the excuse of needing to hunt. After all, he hadn’t gone for weeks. Jasper stared into the dark green vegetation. What was he going to do?
