I WAS DIFFICULT TO REACH b u t y o u p i c k e d m e , The denizens of the Volturi's Castle had learned in their extensive years two critical things about Jane. One, you should never ever make her angry. Two, she spent a lot of time alone in her quarters, and this was normal behavior for her (there was a third thing that many of them had figured out for themselves- disturbing her in her quarters made her angry).
So, when she holed herself up in her room for three days, nobody was concerned. She liked to keep tabs on the outside world- not many of the Volturi had a particularly high regard for human news, but she found it intriguing somehow. The human world, at the moment, was war stricken, impoverished. She lead a truly privileged life.
This was how she caught wind of Isabella Swan's disappearance. She'd subscribed to the newspapers local to the Cullen's area long ago, for although Aro seemed to inexplicably trust them she was constantly wary of their lifestyle. And here it was, the payoff, lain out before her in bold typeset: Missing Girl, Isabella 'Bella' Swan. A smile crept over her features.
She'd never met Bella, although Marcus and Caius had been keeping tabs on her. Apparently their dearest Edward had taking a liking to her (and not in the way Jane took a liking to children of her own age). It was Jane's opinion that she should be terminated before the relationship could continue, but Aro had decided he'd like to see "how it played out".
She gathered the fragile pieces of paper up in her arms and tiptoed out of her room, looking like a naughty child up past her bed time. Padding through the dimly lit hallways, she came to her brother's room.
"Alec," She stated simply in a whisper as she stood in front of his door. She rarely knocked on doors. It seemed plebeian to her, somehow. In fact, the whole concept of doors was ludicrous when everyone could plainly hear what was going on inside the room anyway, but like every other superfluous oddity in the castle, Aro took a liking to them.
She shifted from foot to foot impatiently as she waited for her brother to open the door.

As usual Alec was holed up in his room, one of the few times he was actually home in Volterra, as opposed to on some mission in some foreign country as he usually was. Truly, he liked travel- he did. But Alec much preferred to spend as much time as possible with his twin. Of course, that meant that he ought not to be in his room, reading as he was, he ought to be with Jane, supporting her in what ever deed she’d done, or was intending to do.
As sadistic as Alec was, the pair were trouble to anyone they met and were anything but devoted fully to. Pain, death, madness, and insomnia left quite a wake wherever they went. But that was how they had turned out, despite Aro’s insane motions to love and dote upon the twins when they had been the age they appeared.
So, he was reading one of a few newspapers he had subscribed to over the years. Being in the guard meant keeping a close watch on all known covens, and recognizing when trouble was being made. A few weeks ago he had read the newspaper about murder in San Francisco, and immediately gone to deal with the single newborn there. Of course it had been the result of a meal gone wrong, but it was easily taken care of. Newborns were no problem, especially when he used the gift he possessed.
The confusion was apparent on Alec’s face as he poured over a newspaper article from the Washington Times. Bella Swan was missing, the consort of Edward Cullen, he had learned. He furrowed his brow as he read on. She had last been seen at the Cullens’ residence. How troublesome, it meant the Cullens were going to be a problem. They had changed the girl, he was sure, because young Edward had not yet come to the Volturi to ask for his death. He grabbed a pair of scissors from the desk he sat at and clipped out the article, pinning it to a bulletin board that hung above the desk.
The boy was aware of a motion at the door, and an endearing scent that he knew well. Alec smiled as she spoke his name, and he opened the door, his eyes taking note of the serious expression on Jane’s features. “What is it dear sister?” he asked softly, taking her hand and leading her to the leather loveseat that usually went unused. A prop. He sat beside her and furrowed his brow again. “Is it about the Swan child?” he probed. He glanced at the bulletin board and sighed heavily. “It appears that the Cullens have become a threat to the peace. They have risked exposure by changing her.” He said.

I WAS DIFFICULT TO REACH b u t y o u p i c k e d m e , Jane flounced into the room, light on her feet as ever, and spared a rare, genuine smile for her brother. In their fleeting human years they had been attached at the hip, never going anywhere separate from one another. Jane's memories were somewhat foggy, but she figured in retrospect that their village had seen them as some sort of threat, some sort of witches- these two dark children who'd speak with no one but each other, who'd seemingly knocked a boy over or pull a girl's braid from yards away. Jane's eyelashes fluttered at these recollections (she hadn't thought of her human life in centuries now) and she sat down on the leather love seat, gathering her impeccably clean white skirts around her legs.
Now, it was the rare occasion Jane and Alec were seen together, let alone in public. While he often left the safety of the castle to scout the outside world with the rest of the guard, Jane stayed confined in its depths, hiding away in her room or else conferring with Aro and Sulpicia on the workings of the human world or else the intricacies of the vampiric one. Jane had grown accustomed to taking care of minor mishaps within Volterra itself, but rarely traveled outside its walls.
"Yes, brother dear," She said, her tone perhaps a little more enthused than it should have been. She'd never met Bella personally but knew quite a bit about her from hearsay. In particular the girl's ability to block Edward's gift intrigued her. She longed to put this odd happenstance to the test with more direct methods. "Although my first thought was not that she'd been changed, it's become a possibility." Folding her hands neatly in her lap, her shockingly red eyes drifted to the newspapers on Alec's desk.
"If that's the case than it's my opinion that the Cullens will be vacating as soon as the Swan girl is able. It's such an urgent matter, you see," At this point, her voice dropped in pitch, though it had already been undetectable to human ears. "That I feel we have no time for Aro's deliberations. I think we should set out for Forks immediately." She was confident in her proposal, because even though she presented it as risky she knew that she and Alec would be easily forgiven for any misbehavior. Visiting the Cullens was certainly not a fallacy, and despite their appearance, she and Alec were not children. They could make their own decisions.

Ah joy. The feeling flared up inside his dead heart as she smiled for him. Such a lovely smile, it was so rare, and so appropriate that most would fare agony to see it. Of course, she would never give him that experience, and he returned the favor, except for when she was in insurmountable amounts of pain. In which case, of course he’d lend her oblivion- freedom from it until it was gone. He loved her so, more than any sibling had ever loved their other. More than anyone could ever love someone.
He couldn’t help but smile himself. The boy kept a trained eye on his sister as she smoothed the skirts around her, sitting down on his simple couch. Alec sighed wistfully as she went straight to business. Of course, he’d expect nothing less of his sister- always the obedient, orderly, and devoted girl. Sometimes he wished that she would accompany him on his travels- live a little, see the world and all that. Perhaps her character would change a little bit.
“Yes, I believe she’s been changed. The signs are all there, and Edward Cullen has not yet asked for his death from anyone. Their disappearances or deaths will be the next thing to watch for, dear sister.” He said in a very businesslike tone of voice. “And then we act, I think.” He said, his lips pulling up a bit at the corner in the form of a troublesome smirk. Hell raisers. That would be an accurate description of Alec and Jane. He followed her gaze to his stack of newspapers. The Forks Gazette, Seattle Times, and the Peninsula Daily News all outlined the disappearance of Isabella Swan.
He couldn’t help but admire his sister’s thinking. “Oh yes, I agree… quite urgent indeed.” Oh how he wanted to just slaughter the lot of them. What sort of gods did they think they were, flouncing the Volturi ancients’ one rule. Exposure was a risk when you reported someone who had been turned, whether intentionally or not, as missing. Because the police would not stop until a body was found, or until the parents or family of whoever had gone missing called it off. It did not seem likely that Charlie Swan would do so any time soon. Had the Cullens’ diet messed with their brain or something? To deliberately disobey the Volturi was really quite stupid. More often than not, stupidity deserved punishment.
“You’ll accompany me on this journey, right?” he asked doubtfully. She didn’t like to leave the Volturi castle, he knew. As well, he respected her decisions. It was more that he got lonely and just a little sadder every time he had to say goodbye. Because he was so very old, that was a lot of goodbyes, and a considerable amount of depression on his plate. He hoped dearly that she would come. Alec knew how much Jane wanted to test Isabella’s apparent immunity to all powers to do with the mind. Truth be told, he did too.

"Quite." She agreed, drawing her pale fingers up to her lips in thought. "They've really drawn too much publicity for anyone's own good." She nodded her head then, letting her hands fall to her lap. Jane had always been pretty laid back when it came to the rules (in the sense that it'd always be easy to clean up if anyone slipped), but the Cullens were indeed toying with disaster. It would not be easy to wipe out half of Washington State if an article on their true nature was published. Enjoyable, perhaps, but not easy and certainly not covertly.
Though she had met only Carlisle personally, Jane had always been somewhat intrigued by their lifestyle. Not tempted in any sense of the word, but intrigued none the less, much in the same way Aro was. They very idea that they could go against their own nature (like lions eating grass or fish forgoing water) was so beyond her that she'd always wished to observe their ways firsthand. This, and the talk of Bella's talents was more than enough to lure her away from the Volturi Castle.
"Of course, yes." She informed her brother, sitting up a little straighter. "It'll be fun. Waiting through airport security, people asking us if we've lost our mommy, and the abysmal Washington weather. It's a wonder why I don't leave more often." She sighed melodramatically, a smile gracing her features again. Jane was not the sort to make jokes, really, but Alec brought out the best of her. She hopped off the couch, then, and wandered to her brother's side.
"Well, with that decision made, we'd better be off immediately." If they stayed around, it was undoubtable that one of the guard, with their various and sundry talents, would request to come along. She had no desire to be bogged down with her coworkers. They could find their own way to Forks. She tilted her head to one side and stared at her brother expectantly.
(ehh no I win on the suckish post front ;P)
