rp sample ••Jasper shoved open the double doors and stepped outside into the light drizzle. It was fifth period at Forks High School and he was already struggling. He and his family were scheduled to leave for a ‘camping trip’ on Friday, but Jasper wasn’t sure if he could make it that long. Frustration knotted in his chest as he breathed in the fresh air, letting it clear out the scent of human blood from his system…purifying him once again. His teachers and classmates must have thought him crazy sometimes, the way he just up and left his classes without even a word, sometimes not returning at all. He always got an ‘excused’ note from Carlisle, but he could tell it was irritating to teachers by the emotions they displayed the next day.
And who could blame them?
It was a fairly frequent occurrence with Jasper.
He leaned against one of the brick pillars that held up the roof to the covered walk, his eyes scanning the blurred view ahead. It would be so easy just to leave, to go and never come back. He put them all in danger this way, he was too much of a liability…too weak…he’d wind up giving them away in the end. They all knew it; though they’d never say it aloud…he could sense it in their emotions every time he almost stumbled, every time Edward caught him daydreaming those monstrous fantasies.
It had even happened today at lunch when Whitney Palmer had come to stand at the head of the table beside theirs. The heater had blown the air just right to send a whiff of her his way and almost immediately his mind had begun to wander. Fantasies of him getting up from their table, walking over to stand beside her, and leaning close to her…as though to tell a secret…his lips coming to rest against the hollow of her throat…Edward had kicked his chair to snap him out of it thank God, but only Alice knew what could have really happened…though she’d never tell him the truth. She wanted to be an encouragement to him and one of her methods was to always reassure him that he would not have hurt anyone.
Alice…some of the frustration in his chest faded as he thought about her. She was the *only* reason he stayed. As much as he loved the others, Alice was what made him want to keep trying…because she could see things in him that he couldn’t. She believed in him, as cheesy as it sounded. Why, he didn’t know. As a former solider he knew when one should cut their losses and abandon a man who had become too much of a burden…and he was that man to his family.
Unfortunately for all of them, he could never leave her. He was bound to her…and the thought of ever hurting her made him feel physically ill. No, he’d stay and keep fighting until the battle was won…that was what a good soldier did.
