Silence reigned for a good long while, as Alice stared at the marks on his arms. Jasper watched her face, felt her shifting emotions. At least he had more to go on than most men in this situation. It was less nerve wracking than flying blind. Jasper knew as much as he’d introduced a new idea to her, and that would take some getting use to. She seemed to be a bit…unsettled on the subject of the Volturi. That did make sense, the Volturi were strange, one of a kind. It wasn’t often that their kind settled into families. It wasn’t that they were incapable of companionship. But few desired it. Many vampires were loners. The idea of any large group of them living together was strange. It always was.
When there was an abrupt shift in her emotions, Jasper’s eyebrows furrowed. The intimidation gave way to pity, compassion. But there was more to it that that. Alice had just realized something, and if Jasper had the power of Lord Aro, he would know what that was. Instead he stared at her in confusion, wishing he could know more. To an extent Jasper did understand what was going on with Alice, which she knew. Thus, her anxiety to make him understand began to dissipate. That helped with Jasper’s nerves in turn. Feeling Alice so worked up bothered him. He didn’t like knowing she was so anxious or worried about anything.
Jasper tried to ignore her swirling emotions for a moment, and instead think of the here and now. It was only making him anxious being so closely tied with her. Not that he didn’t like it. Jasper loved feeling closer to Alice, and still noticed shifts in her emotions, but only the most dominant one. He wasn’t bothering with delving so deeply any longer. They’d made it through the hard part of their talking, and now he felt more relaxed. His mind turned to the feel of her cool fingertips brushing the scars on his wrists. It was impossible to miss the love that had risen in her chest. Jasper still wondered if she knew what it was. But he wasn’t going to tell her. Not until she asked. Just out and saying, “I love you too,” may be a bit too creepy for her. Of course Alice seemed to understand and embrace the unnatural so far, but Jasper wasn’t willing to push his luck any longer.
It didn’t seem to take long on her part before she seemed to understand. That understanding caused her love to swell within her. A low chuckle escaped him. With Amadeo, Jasper had been lonely, wanting companionship, even if he wouldn’t admit it to himself. With them, it had been lust, originally fueled by Amadeo’s only desire, his strange powers. After a while Jasper did begin to feel something for him. But that was all it had been. A need for companionship, a need to feel loved and accepted. But this was different. Jasper still wanted someone, but this was more than he’d expected. Alice was everything he wanted, everything he needed and then some.
She didn’t react to his words. She seemed unsurprised, but not disappointed by his statement. Jasper realized that Alice probably knew more than he did. She saw things, and thus, knew what was in store for them. That was when he kissed her. Then and there in the middle of a strangers living room, on the floor, in broad daylight. This kiss was nothing like Jasper had ever experienced before. It was soft, not tainted by uncontrollable desire. It wasn’t just a need for physical contact. This was more. This was his first kiss with the female he knew he’d be with for the rest of eternity. This was the beginning of forever. Jasper knew in that moment that he would forever be happy, here in her arms. He would do anything to stay there in her presence, making sure she was happy, and taken care of.
Alice pulled back a short distance and met his gaze. “I like the sound of being ‘your little vampire’.” She told him. Jasper smiled, and tightened his hold on her as her head dropped to his shoulder. His chin settled atop her head while she breathed another question against his neck. Jasper chuckled deeply, and sighed before answering.
“No one will beat the Volturi.” Jasper stated, respect lacing his tone. “I backed out of the army just before the fight broke out. My three companions were all killed in the war. The only reason I’m alive is because I fled.” Jasper explained. At the time he wasn’t able to imagine the thought of facing Amadeo again in that war. They hadn’t seen one another in many a year, and the thought of seeing his former lover once more on the battle field was a bit too much to handle. That, along with his distaste for the life was Jasper’s reason for leaving. He’d never been a part of the real war, only caused it. “I really shouldn’t ever go back. I spent some time in Italy…and….” Jasper’s voice trailed off. “I made a few enemies in my short stay. If I return, one of the three Volturi brothers will kill me for what I did.” Jasper announced bluntly. He knew Alice would likely inquire further about that. Still, he dropped the subject. Jasper didn‘t want Alice to know what he‘d done to Brianna. If she knew, she‘d be in as much trouble as he was. She could be tortured for his whereabouts if she ever wound up in Italy. Jasper refused to put her in that situation.
