Edward was standing outside of the Cullens' house, just by the edge of the nearby forest, his expression pained and his eyes closed.Though it was unnecessary, he took a deep breath of the cold night's air as he leaned on the trunk of a nearby tree. His mind couldn't relax, the guilt that had formed over the past weeks was still hardening his shoulders. Will it ever go away? Will he ever be able to look Bella in the eyes, knowing that he failed?Knowing that he failed to protect her, that it was his fault her humanity was taken away?He should never have pushed this.He forced her to go to the birthday party his family put together for her and loathed himself for it.She told me she didn't want to go.
He let a sigh escape his lips and his body began to slid down to the ground, his back still against the tree.He didn't feel the coldness of the earth, nor the drops of water still lingering on the grass after the rain.He wasn't able to feel anything, not physically or mentally. His whole being was controlled by pain, guilt and anger towards both himself and Jasper. His own brother brought this upon them by losing his control. He always knew Jasper was the one who struggled most with the Cullens' way of life, but never did he think that he would be able to do such a thing, no matter how vulnerable he was to human blood. The thought that he wasn't able to protect Bella from his own brother tortured him to no end and brought him a pain he didn't know it was possible to exist.A pain that was starting to take over senses and his mind.He couldn't think about anything else but the fact that Bella's life was taken from her and every time he closed his eyes, her screams in agony, as Jasper's venom changed her entire body, echoed in his head.
The silence that previously surrounded the Cullens' house was broken by a deafening sound, like thunder that came from the last floor of the mansion.Edward's eyes snapped open and his jaw clenched. He stood up in a blink of an eye, but didn't move.He remained motionless with his hands curled into fists, staring at the window that he knew led to the room Bella was in.His ears were listening closely to any sort of movement from within it, but as the seconds passed, he relaxed his stance. It was clear to him what happened.Bella tried to escape her dorm and Emmet reacted in time to stop her, as he always did.He couldn't express his gratitude toward his brother for doing the one thing he couldn't: keeping Bella safe from escaping and go on a killing rampage.Lately, he could barely express any of his thoughts since they were almost always clouded by the ones of his love.It was quite a while since he last spoken to anyone for more than a few moments, for words are hard to get out when your heart is not herself.
Seeing that no more signs of violence came from the room, he turned back to his position at the base of the tree's trunk, but this time, he did not close his eyes.He didn't want to hear her screams in pain. All he wanted was to speak to her again, to look in her chocolate brown eyes, to see her cheeks blush after he kissed her.He felt weak and useless for not being able to do anything that will end her suffering or bring her back to normal. But there was no turning back.He knew that, everybody did, including her.But she was not ready. It came too soon and unexpected, even if she did wanted it.She missed out on most of human experiences and she didn't even had time to say goodbye to her parents and her friends. It was his fault Bella's life was taken away from her and he would never forgive himself for that. But would she?Would she ever be able to forgive him?He was ready to spend all his existence trying to earn her forgiveness, not matter how long that meant. She was his life, his heart, but could she ever believe that he loved her after all she went through because of him?
